Extra Tour INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE
Recovering the collective memory
Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Barcelona has been among the major manufacturing cities of the European continent, with the Catalan textile industry being of particular importance. The construction of the Olympic Village on a former industrial site resulted in a considerable loss of historic fabric, but also helped grow public awareness of Barcelona´s industrial heritage. The conversion of abandoned factories into civic centers and cultural facilities testifies to the importance of citizen engagement in urban transformation processes, leaving no doubt that industrial heritage is expected to have a bright future.
